A Piece of Eight cast in bronze and hung on a gold filled chain makes the perfect layering or accent piece. Pieces of eight come from original Spanish dollars (Real de a ocho) that were stamped in silver and considered the standard currency for 300 years between 1400 and 1700. One dollar equaled 8 réals and since they didn't use smaller denominations, the dollars were cut into eight equal pieces to pay in réals rather than dollars. During this time, Spain produced 80% of the silver coins and 90% of gold coins in the world, which accounted for 95% of the world's currency at the time.
This piece is also available in sterling silver.
Bronze, gold filled chain and lobster clasp. 17" with 2" extension. Hand made in the USA
