The Italian horn can be traced back to ancient Rome when the symbol was often seen as good luck, and later evolved to be a bulls horn associated with power and conquering.  

Today, the Italians believe the cornicello is both a lucky and protective amulet that will ward off negative energy or the malocchio, which is the evil eye or jealousy, negativity or wishing ill on someone.
